View Full Version : Sharing my servers
Not sure where to post this, but here goes.
I'm trying to share my servers so that my contacts can view them also. I selected the "for me and my contacts" option, added members to my contacts list, and even made "friends" with one. I'm the only one to see the servers.
Am I missing something?
Thanks...Ron
Dear ron,
Interesting. You managed to trigger a bug in Java-monitor. Thank you for reporting this. I will update you here when this is fixed, ok?
Apologies for the inconvenience.
Kees Jan
Dear ron,
Please try again and let me know if the problem was fixed for you.

mneugebauer logged off and back on and still did not see the servers.

Dear ron,
Where did mneugebauer look? On the forum index page or on your member page? The forum index page only shows his own hosts. To see your hosts, he has to open http://java-monitor.com/forum/member.php?u=5548 (which is your member page).
Kees Jan
That works. I was expecting him to see the servers listed in the java monitor forum as they are in mine.
I missed that one little detail that he had to go to my profile page to see them.
Thanks for your help...Ron

Dear ron,
Great to hear. Just to be clear: you did uncover a bug so that he could not see them yesterday was my fault, even if you guys looked in the wrong place. :)
Just out of curiosity, how do you use this feature? Is he in a different location than you are? Is he supposed to keep an eye on your machines while you are away, or you look at the graphs together or something? Is he de dev and you the admin?
I'd like to get some feedback on what people do, so maybe I can improve it.
Kees Jan
He and I are the web developers for our sites and I also share these charts with our manager. We will be using the monitor during the holiday season to see how busy our servers get and also to indicate where some tweaks might be needed.
FYI, yours is the only monitor that reports on the information that we need, other than jconsole; but you can't run that 24/7. I looked at many others, even the ones for big bucks, and they just didn't give us the information we were looking for.
Thanks...Ron

Dear Ron,
Ah, so you want your manager to look but not touch. :)
I am curious, what specifically makes Java-monitor useful where other tools lack? Which graph or datapoint?
Kees Jan
We're particularly interested in thread usage. My recent researh into other monitors did not give the detail of our thread pool usage that we need. Being able to see thread usage with heap usage and processor load at the same time is essential for our tuning. Throwing in the garbage collector is a plus as well.
This Thanksgiving weekend is the first time we will be closely monitoring the sites in preparation for the run-up to Christmas. Hopefully, the information reported by java monitor will be useful.
