View Full Version : Monitoring server problems?

Last night I received 18 alerts for the 3 servers I am monitoring. These 3 servers are located in Rotterdam, Belgium and Germany.

(another alert just hit my mailbox).

Are these "false positives" and is the alerts server having trouble? Or are we having major internet wide problems?

Dear Kees,

My ISP is having DNS issues. I spoke to them this morning. Their DNS servers died around 18:30 last night and one seems to still be down.

I'm thinking of moving Java-monitor off their premises.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

No problem. It is all in the SaaS-game ...

Dear Kees,

The DNS issues have been resolved by my ISP. I have added an extra fall-back DNS server to my DNS resolver, so in case of further outages Java-monitor should not be impacted as hard as we were today.

The incident also revealed a timing issue in the alerting code, causing Java-monitor to send out large numbers of e-mails for hosts that had their time-out set to 1 minute. I will fix that this afternoon.

Please let me know if you experience further false positives.
