View Full Version : Can Java-monitor be installed locally ?
Hi,
Is it possible to install Java-monitor on a local server, such that I do not have to connect to http://java-monitor.com ?
Regards, Stefan Lecho.

Dear Stefan,
At this time, there is no 'local' version of Java-monitor.com. I have plans for a Java-monitor appliance that localizes the data collection, but it won't be for a while.
Could you explain what is the reason that you'd like to have a local version of Java-monitor.com?
Kees Jan
The goal is to gather the monitoring information on a local server, so that a connection to http://java-monitor.com is no longer required to get an overview of the monitoring information.

Dear Stefan,
I see. What is it that you do not like about using http://java-monitor.com?
It's kind'a the whole point of Java-monitor to make monitoring data accessible via mobile devices and be able to get alerts without installing anything that requires any actual work. :)

If I want to convince my client to use java-monitor to monitor his application servers, he will not be very happy - believe me :) - if a dependency with java-monitor.com is created.
Another reason is to eliminate the issues listed underneath:
Your local DNS server may hickup.
My network may hickup.
My DNS server may hickup.
Java-monitor is being restarted for an upgrade. (this should not happen, but sometimes e-mails do escape because of human error).

Dear Stefan,
Gee, where'd you get the list? :)
If these issues absolutely cannot be part of your solution, then Java-monitor may indeed not be right for you. I'm not sure you can make this list go away, though (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fallacies_of_Distributed_Computing).
I think the key is in the cost. Many companies have the money and manpower to run dedicated monitoring servers. My users tend to be smaller companies or even individuals. They say they have better things to do than feed the servers.
It's up to you and your client, of course. Please don't use Java-monitor if it is not the right fit. :D
