Dear All,

Some of the Java-monitor.com users have servers that are hosted at their home, using their private DSL line or TV Cable service. I have found that these are just not as reliable as professionally hosted services. I have had reports of servers sending out notifications almost every day due to network outages.

What I found is that people tend to ignore the notification messages for such hosts. When they see a notification, they just assume it is their DSL line hiccupping and move on. This means you'll miss the notifications when there really is a problem.

For that reason, I advise Java-monitor users that host their servers on their personal DSL or Cable link to set the host time-out to 20 minutes. That way, you won't get warned about network glitches, but you will still receive a message when the host really went off-line.

PPS. Yes, such glitches do interrupt the service you are hosting. What did you expect? ;-)

PS. I don't mean to put down home-hosted servers. I have been hosting my own web server and mail server at home for years and have no intention of stopping. All I am saying is that you get what you pay for in terms of hosting reliability.
